Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s largest container handling port located in Raigad district, Navi Mumbai, east of Mumbai, oversees the Arabian Sea via Thane Creek.

Ongoing projects like the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), and port-to-road expansions aim to enhance connectivity with the hinterland. The completion of these initiatives, particularly the DFC, is set to increase rail capacity from 27 to 100 trains daily.

Managing over half of India’s container volume across 12 ports, JNPT handles about 40% of the nation’s containerized ocean trade and aims to expand capacity to 10 million TEUs.

Strategically positioned near Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Pune, with close access to airports, hotels, and exhibition centers, JNPT caters effectively to shippers.

JNPT operates five container terminals, with four managed by private entities including Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd (GTIPL), Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal Pvt Ltd (NSICT), Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal Pvt Ltd (NSIGT), and Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Private Limited (BMCT).

The port also features a shallow water berth for general and liquid cargo, with the BPCL-IOCL consortium managing the liquid cargo terminal.

The warehousing and logistics sector is witnessing robust growth, with global infrastructure players and private equity setting up hubs across economic clusters. Crescera group facilitates large and medium companies in acquiring logistics and warehouse space in JNPT Uran.

Third-party logistics firms are pivotal, leasing 45% of warehousing space. Retail, FMCG, and manufacturing sectors are increasingly adopting structured operational models, driving demand for efficient last-mile delivery and warehouse solutions.

E-commerce, retail, and manufacturing sectors are outsourcing supply chain operations to 3PL firms for storage needs, flexibility, and cost efficiency, with government initiatives expected to further bolster warehouse growth in the near and medium term.

Including Multi Modal Logistics Parks, electric mobility, giga factories, and quick commerce are expected to further drive warehouse and logistics growth in the near future.

Recently, JNPT introduced a new inter-terminal route connecting BMCT Terminal with others to optimize traffic flow, especially for transhipment and inter-terminal rail operations, aiming to reduce container movement distance and enhance rail utilization.
With a comprehensive customs house ensuring swift vessel turnaround and container clearance at various container freight stations, JNPT plays a crucial role in India’s trade logistics.
